William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (23(?) April 1564 – 23 April 1616)

William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright. He was born and grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was an alderman. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, who was 8 years older. They had three children. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor and writer. He also partly owned a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. In 1599, they built their own theatre on the south bank of the Thames, which they called the Globe. In 1608, they also took over the Blackfriars indoor theatre. Shakespeare became a wealthy man. In 1613 he came back to Stratford, where he died three years later.
Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories. He wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth. Then he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights.
