Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930)

A. C. Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a British author best known for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered a major innovation in crime fiction. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was an English alcoholic of Irish origin. His mother, Mary Foley, was Irish.
Arthur went to the Roman Catholic Jesuit preparatory school Hodder Place, Stonyhurst, at the age of nine. He then went on to Stonyhurst College where he rejected Christianity to become an agnostic.
From 1876 to 1881, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. At the university he began writing short stories.
In 1882, he set up a medical practice at 1 Bush Villas in Elm Grove, Southsea. The practice was initially not very successful; while waiting for patients, he again began writing stories. His first significant work was A Study in Scarlet, which featured the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes.
While living in Southsea, he played football for an amateur team, Portsmouth Association Football Club. He was also a keen cricketer, an occasional bowler, and also a keen golfer.
He was married twice (in 1885 and 1907) and had 5 children.
In December 1893, he wanted to stop writing about Sherlock Holmes and start writing historical novels. So in the story The Final Problem Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty (his enemy) die together in a waterfall. But the public was angry, so Doyle brought Holmes back in the story The Adventure of the Empty House. He explained that only Moriarty died. Holmes ultimately appeared in a total of 56 short stories and 4 novels.
Apart from detective stories Arthur Conan Doyle also wrote other novels, for example the science fiction novel The Lost World .
Arthur Conan Doyle was found very sick in his house in Crowborough, East Sussex, on 7 July 1930. He soon died of a heart attack. He was 71 years old.
